brave and foolish

SEEKAE – THE BACON BOYS

Sydney ghetto ambient group Seekae (pronounced ‘C’ ‘K’ in homage to platform pioneer Commander Keen) are the new Enya. Our taxi driver told us this, and although his argument for such a ridiculous assertion was Richie-thin, we believe he has a strong point.

We won’t get into that. Of more interest is how you can claim you’re ‘ghetto’ and then mention that you incorporate the glockenspiel into your routine. That ain’t fly.

They popped into Underground (every THURSDAY 10pm-12am FM99.3) because they’re on the cusp, the verge, and the edge of whatever follows being on the cusp, the verge, and the edge of something. Audio of the entire interview to be posted REAL SOON. Highlights included:

*admission that they’ve recently scored the theme to groundbreaking film ‘The Willpower’

*Alex regularly has his hair permed at The Salon for Hair – Turramurra (proud sponsors of North Shore FM99.3)

* they actually don’t know when or who will be releasing their forthcoming debut album

* they’re pretty sure that have a show scheduled at Will and Toby’s Supper Club, September 4

* George spent a night in with K.D. Lang during her recent Australian tour

* they’re the new Enya

* their plans to split and then reform for 2010

* the addition of DJ Meatbrick to their live act

some of the above is truer than other parts but importantly, new music was played, we dug into their live performance, some of their inspirations, and all up a good time was had.

2nd HALF OF INTERVIEW AND PODCAST OF ENTIRE SHOW TO BE POSTED MAD SOON

SHINGO SUZUKI – METAPHOR FOR THE ABSTRACT

Shingo!

Japan got it on lock….Shingo Suzuki’s new album ‘The Abstract Truth’ has a shit long sub title that hints at wankiness and a lack of talent (seriously, the amount of poorly mastered, bit-talented artists who sell their stuff on Juno etc.!) but is quite the opposite!

guests like Moka Only, Blu and fellow Origami labelmate Thirdiq amongst others, swell jazz leanings and boombap hiphop good times. Definitely deserves the time and effort.

SPOONFACE & WAH SYNDICATE – WHOLE HEAP AH

Spoonface and WAH Syndicate need some shine – dub, broken styles that are some of the best I’ve heard all year!

“WAH Syndicate are Elroy ‘Spoonface’ Powell’, Philip ‘Floor Fillah’ Craig and guesting artist Michael ‘Kaspa’ Gosling, all in it to flip it’ and make the music they make for fun frolics and pure sonic fornication. All from comparatively varied musical backgrounds they collaborate to create a truly eclectic combination of reggae-tinged-Jazz-matazz-hop-dance-movery. If there is such a genre.

Although they follow no particular trend, WAH Syndicate provide a fresh new take lending itself well to the genre bending Broken Beat scene. Their music is packed with ideas that flow seamlessly, allowing the ideas and personalities of the individuals to surface.
‘Slow your Roll’ is a classic example of how they form a cohesive, inviting musical patchwork quilt embracing the most varied audience.

Spoonface’s reggae sing-jay hookery combined with Philip Craig’s solid Jazz sensibility offers something for all to take away for the liking”

their label, Faada,  has a poor Myspace site and the rest, but still??!!!

NO RIDES LEFT FOR THE HORRORSHOW

Adit and Solo form Horrorshow, Sydney based label Elefant Traks‘ first signing for quite some time

“What began with early experiments in beat making and writing lyrics steadily increased in confidence and by the age of 18, Solo was joining Spit Syndicate on stage (supporting the likes of Atmosphere and Bliss n Eso) and Adit had progressed far beyond those first few tentative steps. Horrorshow slowly began drafting and developing material before deciding in 2007 to start recording – resulting in a collection of songs entitled ‘The Grey Space’.

It was not until 2008 that these songs caught the ear of Elefant Traks on the strength of a growing buzz and strong recommendations. Not long after, the pair signed to the label and The Grey Space was given a release date of August 16th 2008.

The funny thing is, Elefant Traks were never planning to put out a release around that time as the schedule was completely full. Perhaps that’s the best way of introducing Horrorshow – a group that demands your attention with a heartfelt offering that showcases honest lyricism and rich production at a level that is unexpectedly mature. So keep an ear out, because in 2008 – grey is the new black…”

serious niceness that needs to be supported!

‘Storm’

couldn’t help but take note of all the death jazz talk on the Brownswood blog

there’s a seriously dope, in depth podcast on the stuff that can be downloaded from the above link

and of course, Brownswood Recordings have these Japanese guys signed called  Soil and Pimp Sessions who have a thing for rabbits and out there, outrageously good sounds. Jazz badasses.

the video for ‘Storm’ above is just the tip of icebergs and causes me to feel like I’m having a brain freeze. But in a good way ya dig?
